Adapting Your Plant Care for the Winter Season

The cold and grey winter months bring unique challenges for plant care.

As a garden centre, you play a crucial role in guiding customers on how to keep their indoor plants healthy during the colder months.

We've created a guide to help your staff provide expert advice for at home plant care whilst demonstrating best practice in-store.

1. Water

  • Water plants less frequently and test soil moisture beforehand – using a finger or water meter.

  • Water early in the day to give plants time to absorb moisture and prevent water from sitting in cold soil overnight.

  • Use pots with drainage holes and well-draining soil to prevent root rot.

  • To avoid nutrient buildup, stop using feed until the spring, as most plants are dormant during the winter months.

2. Light

  • Position plants near large windows and rotate them regularly for even light distribution.

  • Use grow lights for plants that need additional exposure during shorter days.

  • Place plants near south or east-facing windows where they can receive more light.

3. Temperature

  • Keep plants away from doors, heat sources, and drafty areas to maintain a consistent temperature.

  • Use a digital thermometer to monitor temperature levels near plants.

4. Humidity
  • Use a humidifier to counteract dry indoor air from heating systems.

  • Cluster plants together to create microclimates with higher humidity.

  • Place trays with water and pebbles under plants to increase humidity.

5. Cleaning and Pruning

  • Trim yellowing or dead leaves to promote healthy growth and prevent further decay.

  • Dust leaves with a damp cloth regularly to improve light absorption.
